Originally a Dutch settlement, control of Greenwich gradually changed hands to the British during the 17th century. At one point it was considered part of Stamford, but, with the fall of New Netherland in 1664, Greenwich was declared a separate township. During the 19th century, Greenwich grew as a town after the construction of a railroad linking it New York and New Haven. At the turn of the 20th century, Greenwich had become a resort industry, and retains much of a resort feel to this day.
Greenwich is home to four beaches on Long Island Sound: Greenwich Point, Byram Beach, Island Beach and Great Captain Island. Greenwich Point also features a park which offers residents a community sailing center, while rollerblading and cycling are popular pastimes on the paths during the summer months. The town owns a local golf course, and there are also eight country clubs in town. Greenwich is home to the longest running teen center in the U.S.
Every October, Greenwich’s Bruce Museum hosts the Outdoor Arts Festival, a high-quality craft fair. The festival is strictly juried, with only 80 entrants allowed each year. The museum also holds a crafts festival every year which features jewelry, metalwork and ceramics. The Greenwich Symphony Orchestra perform a pops concert every summer, as well as regular symphony events. Occasionally they perform with the Greenwich Choral Society, who have also performed with several symphonies throughout the nation.
Greenwich Public Schools is ranked among the highest rated public school systems in the state. There is one public high school and three middle schools. The the number of students in the town who are accepted to the college of their choice is very high. There are also 12 private schools which offer education across a range of grades.
