First settled in 1735, Torrington is rich in history and prides itself on its manufacturing past. Manufacturing is still the main industry in the area, with retail being the second most common..

The city has two high schools: Torrington High School and Oliver Wolcott Regional Technical High School, but students who choose vocational or agriculture programs also have the option of attending nearby regional schools were such specialties are offered.

Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, is a two-time winner of the Patient Safety Excellence Award.

When coming downtown, you will often see large community events in the summer such as a car show, a festival or the Thursday evening Main Street Marketplace. Crowds also arrive from all over the state during the holiday season to visit with Santa at Christmas Village.
