Around the Area
The beauty and opportunities of nature are a major facet of the community, available throughout the year, as one season turns to the next - New Hartford’s tagline is “A Town For All Seasons.” New Hartford has grown significantly in recent decades, with the population rising from under 4,000 in 1970 to just under 7,000 today, according to the Town Plan of Conservation and Development office. There are several historic subsections of the community, including Bakerville, Nepaug, New Hartford Center, Pine Meadow, Satan’s Kingdom, Town Hill and West Hill.
There are two elementary schools in the community - New Hartford Elementary and the Bakerville School - as well as the Ann Antolini School for students in grades three through six. New Hartford high-school students attend Northwestern Regional High School, along with young people from Barkhamsted, Colebrook and Norfolk.
The Farmington River runs through town, offering the chance for fishing, boating and tubing, and the West Hill Pond Lake provides local residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy further time out on the water. Visitors can hike on trails in the community, including the Jones Mountain Preserve, to enjoy the fall foliage.
In the colder months, folks can hit the slopes in town: Ski Sundown offers 70-acres and 16 trails for skiing and snowboarding - and there’s skating on the Pine Meadow Town Green. Community events include New Hartford Day, featuring a variety of attractions and offerings from local vendors as well as offerings from the Beekley Community Library, the Bakerville Library and the New Hartford Riverview Market.
