Area Description

Harwinton is a rural community of more than 5,000 residents, bordered by Torrington, New Hartford, Burlington, Plymouth, Thomaston and Litchfield. The town was settled in 1731 and incorporated in 1737, according to the town historical society and continues a focus on that history with two historic districts.

Around the Area

The population of Harwinton has increased in the past 50 years, according to the 2010 Plan of Conservation and Development, with the majority of residents living in the northwest corner of the community.

About 44 percent of residents have jobs in professional management positions, Harwinton students attend Region 10 schools along with young people from Burlington, rising to Har-Bur Middle School and onto Lewis S. Mills High School.

The community values nature and its rural character. The Harwinton Land Trust has started in 1972 and now owns 170 acres of open space in the community with easements on an additional 90. The Roraback Wildlife Management area also manages 1,976 acres of protected open space. The Harwinton Fair has been a feature in life in community for well over a century, running for more than 161 years. The event, held each year in October, features a wide variety of music, games and attractions.

There is also a budding annual holiday celebration in the community and an annual kids fishing derby.
